Deltas in Arid Environments

چکیده
Due to increasing water use, diversion and salinization, along with subsidence sea-level rise, deltas in arid regions are shrinking worldwide. Some of the most ecologically important include Colorado, Indus, Nile, Tigris-Euphrates. The primary stressors vary globally, but these threatened by increased storage diversion, eutrophication, wetland loss. In order make sustainable over time, some flow, including seasonal flooding, needs be re-established. Positive impacts have been seen Colorado River delta after flows were increased. addition freshwater collaboration among stakeholders active management necessary. For Nile River, cooperation different nations drainage basin is important. flow into Tigris-Euphrates has affected politics civil strife Middle East, re-allocated delta. Studies commissioned for Indus recommended re-establishment monthly maintain river channel fight saltwater intrusion. However, accelerating climate impacts, socio-political conflicts, growing populations suggest a dire future deltas.

Scratch Resistance of Paints Degraded by Arid Saharan Environments
In the vast Algerian Sahara, the climate is typically desert, characterized by heat and dryness all year, which contributes to a very pronounced aridity. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of this arid environment on automotive paints. Four paint samples with different durations of use were tested. Initially, a visualization of the surface condition by optical microscopy and...
متن کاملForage yield and quality of barley-annual medic intercrops in semi-arid environments
On-farm production of protein is limited in most dairy farm operations in arid and semi-arid environments. Cereal-legume intercropping could be a viable option to obtain forage with higher protein content. A two-year experiment was conducted during 2009 and 2010 growing seasons in a loamy soil to determine whether intercropping pattern of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and annual medic (Medica...
متن کاملPredicting the Future Impact of Droughts on Ungulate Populations in Arid and Semi-Arid Environments
Droughts can have a severe impact on the dynamics of animal populations, particularly in semi-arid and arid environments where herbivore populations are strongly limited by resource availability. Increased drought intensity under projected climate change scenarios can be expected to reduce the viability of such populations, yet this impact has seldom been quantified. In this study, we aim to fi...
متن کاملFractional vegetation cover estimation in arid and semi-arid environments using HJ-1 satellite hyperspectral data
This paper evaluates the usefulness of the hyperspectral imager (HSI) onboard Chinese HJ-1-A small satellite in vegetation mapping. Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important surface microclimate parameter for characterizing land surface vegetation cover as well as the most effective indicator for assessing desertification and crop growth condition. The HJ-1/HSI data were used to calcula...
متن کاملDEM-based analysis of morphometric features in humid and hyper-arid environments using artificial neural network
Abstract This paper presents a robust approach using artificial neural networks in the form of a Self Organizing Map (SOM) as a semi-automatic method for analysis and identification of morphometric features in two completely different environments, the Man and Biosphere Reserve “Eastern Carpathians” (Central Europe) in a complex mountainous humid area and Yardangs in Lut Desert, Iran, a hyper...
